Java Plug-in Mac Download Page. Mac Download Page. Downloads for other platforms. Starting with JDK 7 update 6 Oracle provides a JRE version for Mac OS X users which includes a Java Plugin. The download is available in our main Java SE download page. Oracle does not provide version of the JRE below Java SE 7. Java 7 download free download - Apple Java for OS X 10.7/10.8, Apple Java for OS X 10.6, Java 2 SE, and many more programs. I was trying to install the Java 7 package off of java.com (50MB). When I went and got the one from Oracle (150MB), that one installed correctly. Still no 'Java Preferences' app though.

While you can download the binaries for Java 7 for Windows and Linux from here, the instructions for setting up Java 7 for Mac OS X are a lot more tedious.

Install Oracle Java 7 on Mac OS X. Nowadays, just about everything on the web uses Java. At some point or another you will probably need to install Java on Mac OS X to be able to enjoy the Internet, websites and Apps to their fullest. Java for OS X is an Apple vetted Java environment, designed to be as highly integrated as possible within its own operating system. Java for OS X has been created to mix OS X's advanced technologies and Java's adaptability and omnipresence on almost all software platforms out there.

Here are the official instructions for Mac OS X: http://wikis.sun.com/display/OpenJDK/Mac+OS+X+Port

You can follow the instructions line by line and get Java 7 installed on your machine. However, these are the things that might go wrong:

Missing binaries in /bin

The installation expects a bunch of binaries to be present in /bin. However, on my Mac OS X, these binaries were present in /usr/bin/. My workaround was to create symlinks in the /bin directories to make the build happy.

Repeat the above for each binary that is reported missing in /bin.

Missing jni.h

Make sure that the version of XCode is 3.2.5 or more. I had a 3.2.4 version and that didn’t work.

Building JTReg did not work due to a known bug

It is mentioned in the JTReg build documentation but easy to miss it. The following does not work due to a know bug:

Instead try this:

Wrong installation directory in the official instructions

The official instructions ask you to do this:

That didn’t work for me. Here’s what worked for me:

Finally, setting up env vars

The easiest way to make confirm that Java 7 is successfully installed is:

Jre download for mac

The output of the above should be:

Download

Then type ‘java -version’ against the above installation

Since I use Java 1.6 on the same machine, I saved the 1.7 path as follows:

This lets me conveniently switch to Java7, when I need to, and back:

An error “you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime”, is encountered when you open any Adobe application.

With Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) and later, the Java runtime is no longer installed automatically as part of the OS installation. Follow any of the methods below to install Java runtime.

You can download and install the latest Java runtime from the Java website - Download Free Java Software.

On Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite), when you launch any Adobe product, you might receive a warning 'The Application has been moved and its path has been changed...'.

Click Repair Now or Update button to update the location and resolve the issue. When prompted for password, enter your system password to complete.

If Java runtime is not installed, you are prompted to install when you first launch any Adobe product. Follow the onscreen instructions in the Java required notification dialog box to install.

Use the following method to initiate the Java runtime installation or confirm if it is installed.

  1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Java Preferences.
  2. If Java is not installed, you receive the following message: “To open “Java Preferences,' you need a Java runtime. Would you like to install one now?”

  3. Click Install and accept the license agreement. The Java runtime is downloaded and installed.

Many Adobe applications depend on the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for some features to work. Apple recently changed the way it includes Java in Mac OS, and with Lion, Java is no longer preinstalled. It is now an optional install that you must select.

Since current Adobe installers and applications were built before these changes by Apple, Adobe software anticipates that Java is installed. Adobe and Apple have worked together to ensure that you can install Java at OS install time. Or it can be installed later before you install Adobe applications. At runtime, when you launch an Adobe application, you are prompted to install Java if it is not already installed. If you do not install Java before running an Adobe application, there can be missing or improperly behaving features. If you encounter any issues, install Java to correct the problems. Adobe recommends that corporate IT organizations pre install Java (or make sure that Java can be installed through their firewalls/security) to avoid conflicts with Adobe applications.

If the Java runtime is not installed, some issues that are known to occur include -

  • Failure to launch.
  • Install Java runtime prompts when you attempt to use the applications.
  • Applications hang or quit.
